Make your message clear and plain

It's a pity that some of our pastors in trying to impress the congregation that he is a man of much learning get lost in a plethora of big words and high sounding phrases. The ordinary man in the street or should I say in the congregation sometimes get confused and I don't blame them for switching off and have a little nap during the sermon. My advise to my fellow preachers of the word - Keep your message simple, and use picture words.

"Make the message clear and plain, Christ receiveth sinful men" says the hymn writer.
Another writer says, "Tell me the story simply as to a little child, for I am weak and weary and helpless and defiled."

This is my story - 72 Hong Kong/Taiwan

72 – Links with China

After that wonderful experience at the International Conference of Leaders and participation at Crystal Cathedral, we flew back to Hong Kong. I felt like the disciples, Peter, James and John after the glorious experience at the Mount of Transfiguration returning to the valley of need. They had to go down from the mountain to heal the sick, feed the hungry, save the lost and bring the lost sheep to the Shepherd.

China was very much in the news. Hong Kong people were jittery because of 1997 the year when the territory would be returned to China. Those who could afford or had connections were emigrating to other lands they reckoned to be safe. The fearful felt the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads.

We received word from the International Secretary for South Pacific and East Asia Commissioner Robert Bath asking us to make arrangements to take him and his wife to visit China. Our leaders at International Headquarters wanted us to keep contact with former Salvationists and prepare for the day when the door hopefully would open for the Army to return to China.

As the Officer Commanding, I represented the Army in the Executive Council of the Hong Kong Christian Council. Apart from attending meetings, I was invited to dinners when prominent officials from overseas visited Hong Kong. One of the frequent visitors was Bishop K H Ting, the President of China Christian Council and leader of TSPM (Three Self Patriotic Movement.) He was also the founder and President of the Amity Foundation and Principal of Nanjing Union Theological Seminary. He was a man with tremendous influence. He was friendly and had a high regard for The Salvation Army.

Earlier in 1985, my wife and I together with Major James Lau and Corps Sergeant Major Wilbur Walker of Dulwich Hill Corps made an initial visit to China. We contacted former officers who warmly welcomed us. For Wilbur Walker it was returning to the land he grew up. Wilbur Walker was only three months old when his parents Major and Mrs. George Walker left Australia for China as Salvation Army missionaries. He lived there with his parents till he was eighteen when he went home to Australia for further education. Wilbur had never forgotten China, the land he spent his childhood.

Major James Lau having been stationed in Taiwan for a few years spoke fluent Mandarin and was our interpreter. We visited Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai and met a number of former Chinese officers. It was a great experience to visit the land of our forefathers for the first time.

Way back in 1912, the Founder General William Booth on his deathbed said to his son Bramwell, “I have been thinking very much during the last few nights about China. I greatly regret that the Lord has not permitted me to raise our flag amongst the wonderful people. Promise me that you will begin the work in China.” Father and son then clasped their hands and prayed together.

In 1906 Commissioner George Scott Railton had visited Tianjin and Shanghai. During the next couple of years he had a Rescue Home in Tianjin. Brigadier Matilda Hatcher was the officer in charge of this Home for two years. Since then different officers at various times had visited China to survey the land. But the time was not ripe for official opening.

On 1st December 1915 a pioneer team of six officers arrived in Beijing. They started to learn Mandarin and a month later on 20th January 1916 the Army officially opened work in China and the name was translated “Chiu Shih Chun” literally meaning “Save World Army.”

The work grew despite trials and tribulations. Twice the work of the Army was proscribed. In 1937 work in North China was closed because of the war and the Army moved to South China. The Salvation Army ceased to function during the dark days of Japanese occupation of China including Hong Kong.

Fast forward to 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong announced to the world the formation of the People’s Republic of China. New guidelines were given to the churches including The Salvation Army.

In 1951 The Salvation Army joined the Chinese Christian Patriotic Three Self Movement under the name of The Salvation Army of China. It had to sever links with International Headquarters. Major Liu Fong was selected as leader and Major Ying Hung Shun as assistant. Finally in 1958 The Salvation Army ceased to exist in China and compelled to merge completely with the The Three Self Movement.

After years of isolation in 1979 Major Yin Hung Shun made contact with The Salvation Army in America. Different people including General Arnold Brown then visited China and made contact with the former Chinese officers.

In1985, it was our privilege to make our first trip. We went on social visit pass and did not wear our uniform neither did we conduct official meetings. We did our pastoral visitation, read the Bible and prayed with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Everywhere we went we were warmly welcomed.

We met many former officers among them Brigadier Su Chien-Chi. I recall when we called on him the first thing he did after greeting us was to sing “Lift up the Army banner, blood and fire!”  We met Major Yin Hung-Shun and officers in Beijing. He had rented the old office of the Territorial Commander at the former Territorial Headquarters from the Three Self Movement and used it to meet visitors. When the group of former officers met us in this room, we shared the word of God and prayers and sang the Founder’s Song “O boundless salvation deep ocean of love.” By the time we reached the last verse tears flowed freely as we sang

“And now hallelujah the rest of my days shall greatly be spent in promoting His praise
Who opened His bosom to pour out this sea of boundless salvation for you and for me.”

God loves a cheerful giver

I read this report in the Internet - Asia 1, and I must admit, feel rather sad that in today's world many have lost the capacity to think in any other terms than their own desires, pleasures, worries, troubles with the consequence of discontent so evident today.

"Mr Chan Chun Sing will never forget the three families who turned up to ask for help at his Meet-the-People Sessions.
One of them earned just $2,000 a month, but managed to raise three children. Another had double that income, of $4,000 to $5,000, and had no children.
But it was the third, a family that earned $16,000 and had two children, who complained the most, saying the Government was not doing enough to help them.
The incident, says Mr Chan, illustrates the rising expectations that Singaporeans have and the challenge that policymakers face as they try to work out who should get more help."

This is Self Denial month and on Sunday we shall have Altar Service. Let us think of others who are less fortunate than we are and give our our best.

Enjoying the Lord's Day

Early this morning at 6.00 a.m. my wife and I went for our usual morning walk in the compound and what struck me was enthusiastic singing and praying in the Praise chapel where we normally use for our Bible class. Later there emerged a group of Filipinos, most were ladies. They had been having an all night prayer meeting. I thank God for such fervent Christians.

We have studying the book of Judges. I had thought I could complete the series by the end of the year, (we close for recess in December because of Christmas activities like carolling, kettling etc) but it is evident I have to stop and the convenient place to do so is Chapter 16. For the concluding chapters 17-21 I am leaving till January 2013. I shall do a summary of the 16 chapters on the last Sunday in November.

This morning the Corps Cadet Counsellor Brother Marcus Moo brought a group of his Corps Cadets to just have a taste of an Adult Bible class.

For the next three Sundays, others will conduct the studies. This gives me a chance to take a rest, besides we shall be conducting the 76th Anniversary meetings at Balestier Church the place where I began my Christian pilgrimage. I was only five years old when I first went to the Sunday School.

It is good for the folk to listen to a different voice and see a different style of conducting studies. Mrs. Lim Li-ching and Brother Terence Tan will take over the classes for the next three weeks. 

The book of Judges is written primarily on a thematic rather than than chronological basis. The author uses the accounts of various judges to prove the utter failure of living out the closing verses of Judges -"everyone did what was right in his own eyes." I call this 'screwed up democracy' - freedom without restraint. The author  points to the cycle of repeated spiral of disobedience, destruction and defeat. We see sin and rebellion that result in defeat and destruction. They we see repentance and supplication followed by deliverance or salvation.

The first part of the Book tells us about the tribes living with the Canaanites, the war with the Canaanites and sadly the last few chapters give us evidence of the Israelites living like the Canaanites.
We have much to learn from these Old Testament stories.

I conclude with some soul searching as I pose questions to myself. Where am I in my walk with the Lord? Am I as close to Him as I should be? This is Sunday night and I pray for those who attended our class and shared in worship. I pray for those who have been too sick to join us in fellowship and worship this Lord's day.

Are you on solids yet?

Travelling on the bus yesterday, I heard the cries of a baby. I noticed the mother pulling out a bottle of milk and gave it to the baby and he/she stopped crying  immediately. It was like magic to silence a child.  

I thought of the verse in the Bible  "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good". 1 Peter 2: 2-3 The baby whatever the species intuitively looks for the source that nourishes it. So the spiritual babe knows where to find milk to enable him to grow up in salvation.

But I feel sad when I think of those who have been in our church for years and are content with just the milk of the word. I recall speaking to one sister about attending the Adult Bible class. Her reply was "No lah - too chhim (meaning deep) for me, besides I am not a morning person! Whether we are larks or owls, if the desire is strong enough, we make the effort.

I am glad there are a number in our church who get up early Sunday morning to be in the chapel at 9.30 a.m. for the Adult Bible class. They are on solid food.

It is interesting to note the words at the end of the text "to find milk to enable him to grow up in salvation."  "Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation" says the New Living Version.

Notice the growing part of being saved- into a full experience of salvation! You see the babe in Christ needs to grow, otherwise it dies. The babe in Christ is not saved for eternity. Sooner or later the spiritual life within him dies. Being saved does not guarantee being safe. A Christian needs to grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Spiritual babies, breast fed, or bottle fed may do well but this is only for a short period of time. They need to grow to eat solids. Spiritual babies may do well as the hymn says, "leaning on the Saviour's breast" or "Leaning on the everlasting arms" but we all need to learn to stand up and fight the war with sin the flesh and the devil.

Across on the side of the bus I noticed a maid giving a child about five or six years old biscuits to eat when the kid said she was hungry. She was craving for solids. They may be on their way home for lunch or on the way to kopitian for a meal, yes to get solid food.

For about ten years I've been conducting the Adult Bible class where we shared solid food with those mature enough to take it. At the moment we are studying the Book of Judges. A number have come to me and confess that they have  never come across the stories in Judges!  I was going to hand the baton to someone else, but no one is willing or ready to take it yet. I have no choice to continue. Following this series, I want to get on to 1 Samuel in the new year.

I've passed by 80th birthday and I don't know how how I can continue. It is my earnest prayer that the Lord will send someone to take over when the time comes for me to lay down the sword.

I've been encouraged by the support given by a mature group of believers who make the effort to come earlier to join us in Bible studies.

 "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[ may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.'

Our Prayer meeting.

This morning my wife and I joined our friends at Territorial Headquarters for  the Global Prayer meeting. We count it  a privilege to be part of the international Salvation Army engaged in mission and prayer. One of the songs used was this challenging one that describes the purpose of The Salvation Army.

May we be a shining light to the nations
A shining light to the peoples of the earth
Till the whole world sees the glory of Your name
May Your pure light shine through us

May we bring a word of hope to the nations
A word of life to the peoples of the earth
Till the whole world knows there's salvation through Your name
May Your mercy flow through us

Random thoughts after visit to Peacehaven

We were at Peacehaven Nursing Home this morning. We did chapel service at HOPE centre, second level. We have not done chapel in this section for some time. Here we encountered residents in different stages of dementia.
 
We chatted with the carers - nurses and therapists. God bless these folk the majority are from foreign countries like the Philippines, China, India, Myanmar. Some are Singaporeans. We just do not have enough local people to do the work.
 
We spent time with the staff giving them words of encouragment and prayed with some of them.
 
Of course, we took time to see our youngest daughter Dora Poh Chin so lovingly cared for by the staff. The chaplain, Jimi Tan was there singing and praying with them. Jimi is very caring and to him this is not a job but a calling. He visits the folk regulary to chat with them and prayed with them. I wish this could be said of all our workers, officers or pastors included.
 
We came away blessed by this caring ministry. Yes, our mission is to save souls, grow saints and care for suffering humanity.
 
I pray this prayer, Lord help me not lose the vision there there is hope for all mankind.  "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he." Proverbs 29: 18. Modern versions translate the word "vision" to "revelation." When we keep close to God He continues to reveal to us what we need to do.
 
"Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law." NIV
 "When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is happy." NLB

One day Helen Keller was asked a question, “What would be worse than being born blind. Her response was “Having sight without a vision.” What a profound statement coming from someone born deaf, dumb and blind. We cannot afford to ignore this truth.

A vision is the ability to see beyond the natural. It includes faith to believe the seemingly impossible. Look at the great men and women of the Bible as recorded in Hebrews 11. They were ordinary people who caught the vision. They were human like us with their faults and failings, but they trusted God, obeyed because God gave them vision.
 
They dared step out of their comfort zones in faith and courage. Vision is the ability to see into the future. Faith is the ability to believe the impossible. Our vision and our faith will lead to courage to step out of our comfort zone to carry out the task God has given us.

Pastors, evangelists, Christian teachers – don’t let your vision be clouded or blurred by the things of the world.

Prayer -speaking and listening to God

"The trouble with nearly everybody who prays is that he says, 'Amen' and runs away before God has a chance to reply. Listening to God is far more important than giving Him our ideas." Frank Laubach.

Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd, I know my sheep and my sheep know me" John 10:14 NIV. The better we know God, the closer we are to Him the more clearly we recognise His voice. God speaks to us through His word, the Bible, through His Holy Spirit, through circumstances, through fellow believers, through dreams and visions. Let us not limit God to one method, He chooses His way to communicate with us. Let us listen to His voice.

Installation of Team Ministry

To day marks the official beginning of a Team Minsitry at William Booth Corps (church). The appointments of Lieutenants Alwin and Dolly Jayabalan from India brings the team to five under the leadership of Major Ruth Pascoe. The other members of the team are Aux. Captains Raymond and Cathy Aloba.

The area of responsibility covers the western side of Singapore - Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang and here at Upper Bukit Timah.  The Lieutenants will be in charge of Eratchippu Corps Tamil ministry and assist the Major in other areas. Aux. Captain Raymond sees mainly to the youth ministry and Cathy for the Bukit Panjang Family and Youth Centre.

The Territorial Commander Colonel Gillian Downer was here today to install the team.

Einstein wrote, "The sum is greater than its parts". A team can contribute more toward the goal or outcome than one individual."

It is good to have a team under one leader. "There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to one hope when you were called" Ephesians 4: 4

We were privilege to join in worship this morning. One of the songs sung today was written by former Geneal John Gowans- "They shall come from the East, they shall come from the west and sit down at the Kingdom of God." Let's work together for the Glory of God and one day we shall all sit in the Kingdom of God in Heaven to enjoy Him forever.

Let Jesus reign supreme in our lives.

There seems to be an increasing hunger and craving for material possessions.  People want more. More pay, more pleasure, more entertainment, more stimulating diversions - these are symptoms of our spiritual poverty.

And Christian workers, like pastors, my fellow Salvation Army officers are not exempted from such temptations. We need to be always be on our guard. We can easily fall into Satan's trap.

We need to keep our relationship with God right and remember His injunction to us all,  "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matt. 6: 33

In very simple terms, the Kingdom of God is the rule of God in our lives. When we allow our Lord to take full control and reign supreme in our hearts then we have the Kingdom of God.

This is Saturday evening and once again I pray for all  who will be preaching and teaching God's word to others.

For me the day will begin with teaching the word of God to our Adult Bible class.

Fellowship with friends

Yesterday a group of us went to Food Haven at Dover Road to have a meal. We welcomed Lieutenants Alwin and Dolly to Singapore where they have been appointed to the Team Ministry - covering William Booth Corps, Eratchippu Corps, Bukit Panjang Family Centre. We had good fellowship and enjoyed our meal together.

Today we had cell group meeting at our home. Then at 12 noon we left for Upper East Coast Road to visit Mrs. Foo to celebrate her birthday. She will be 94 tomorrow. Although frail, she is mentally alert.

She and her husband Foo Kia Pang were officers before the war but resigned from officership to work with the Social Welfare Department (now come under MCYS) Mr. Foo was promoted to Glory in 1997.

Mrs. Foo as Esther Lau looked after my wife and her sister when they were young children - ages six and four. We have always kept contact with her and her husband.

Today we met her daughter Marjory from Australia and her grand daughter Chantel from England. The family take turns to look after her. Two children and their families live in Australia, one daughter and her family in Canada, one son and family in England, two sons and their families live near her in Singapore.

Mrs. Foo's faith is strong and gives a wonderful testimony. She belongs to Singapore Central Corps and in fact is the Number 1 on the roll.

We sang "God will take care of you" one of her favourite songs and prayed with her.

We thank God for friends whose lives have enriched us.

Pray without ceasing

My wife and I attended the Global Prayer meeting at Territorial Headquarters. We had missed the last two meetings as we had medical appointments. As believers in Christ, we should seize every opportunity to pray in groups besides having individual prayer times. Pray without ceasing is Paul's instruction to us.

I take comfort in the words of Jesus to His disciples.  “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Matthew 21: 21-22

We are all busy people. Even those who are not claim to be so! But let us not be too busy to pray. If we are too busy to pray then we are truly TOO BUSY! We are busier than what God wants us to be.

We can pray with conviction that God is able - 'Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, Ephesians 3: 20,

'Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.   James 5: 16.

While Jesus wants us to expand our confidence in the possibilities of prayer, He does not encourage us to manipulate God for God cannot be manipulated. The answers to prayer depend on meeting certain conditions. The word of God tells us that that answers to prayer depend on meeting certain conditions, for example,

'You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasure' James 4: 2-3
'This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.' 1 John 5: 14-15

Let us remember God's answer need not always be in the positive. There are times when He has to say No to our request because He has something better planned for us. '“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' declares the Lord. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55: 8-9


Let us keep praying. The answers may be 'Yes' or 'No' and there are times God tells us to wait for His time. His timing is perfect.

Receiving and giving

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the LORD!” (Ps. 27:13-14).
 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Phil. 4:6).
 “The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry” (Ps. 34:15). “[Cast] all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (I Pet. 5:7).

I turn to the Word of God everyday and there is always some words of encouragement and comfort or challenge that I need. Having received encouragement from the Lord is then my duty and privilege to be a blessing and comfort to others. I cannot remain in the comfort zone if I am to be a blessing to others.

We are more comfortable working in some areas and perhaps not too comfortable in other areas. It is not for me to choose the comfortable zone. The disciple of the Lord must go where He sends, yes including the non-comfort zones.

Jesus said, "Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me"

Kumari Sinayake

Kumari Sinayake was one of the girls at the Salvation Army Girls' Home, Sri Lanka. Thirty three years ago, she came to Singapore to work for a doctor and his family. Now after all these years working for the same family, it is time to return to her homeland where she has no relatives.

It's wonderful The Salvation Army in Sri Lanka very kindly arranged for her to be a resident of The Salvation Army Eventide Home in Dehiwela where she will be cared for in her retirement.

Her own homeland will be a strange land to her but she has no choice. She is not a citizen or permanent resident here and at her age the Government will not renew her work permit.

Last Sunday she attended our church for the last time to bid farewell to folk here. The previous week she was in Balestier to farewell.

God bless Kumari as she leaves us soon for home. The Salvation Army looked after her when she was young, and now in her old age she will live the rest of her life in The Army's Eventide Home.

I've been thinking of the song - "This world is not my home" We are here on this earth, but our home is in heaven and one day we shall join the ransomed in Heaven.

Welcome to new officers - Lieuts.Alwin and Dolly Jayabalan

This morning we welcomed two new officers - young Lieutenants from India - Lieutenants Alwin and Dolly Jayabalan with little daughter Neolin. They were introduced to the congregation, but the installation will be done next Sunday. The appear a nice couple and we hope they will do well in the Team ministry at William Booth Corps. They will take special responsibility for Eratchippu.

This month our focus is on Mission and we are asked to contribute to the Self Denial Fund, this year to support Nigeria and Eastern India Territory.

A time of quiet reflection

This morning it was house cleaning and laundry, then lunch at our son's place to share fellowship and a meal together. It's a cool day, lovely weather and I'm enjoying it.

Now it is Saturday evening and for me a time of  quiet reflection as I sit at the computer. I'm thinking of tomorrow, the day will begin with Adult Bible class and I shall continue with my series of studies from the Book of Judges. I love my solitude.

After the death of Joshua the nation experienced a period of leadership vacuum. The nation now in Canaan were without a strong central government. It was a period when each man did what was right in his own eyes - weird sort of 'democracy' that some people advocate -a kind of 'freedom' without restraint. Israel entered its dark ages in history.

This Book spans a period of 325 years. It records the six successive periods of oppression and deliverance.

So far I have done 24 lessons and tomorrow will deal with the 25th continuing with the life of Samson, a man with tremendous potential. Sadly in his passion he wasted his life. His strength became his weakness! He wasted his gifts in practical jokes and getting out of scrapes.

What a womaniser! The Bible records three women in his life - the woman from Timnath, the prostitute from Gath and that famous or rather notorious Delilah! A great lesson for us to learn that true strength is measured in how well we control our actions, our attitudes and our appetites.

In life we need to follow God's instructions given through His word the Bible. Thank God He has given us His Spirit to guide us. And there is the church where we have fellowship and learn the things pertaining to Christian living.

Well tomorrow we shall join our fellow believers in God's house. I am looking forward to a time of spiritual refreshment.

God’s Omnipresence To The Believer

On a Thursday, we normally join our friends in prayer at The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters chapel. However, we were not able to participate as my wife needs to stay home after undergoing cataract surgery last Monday.

Then she had some ear infection which necessitated going to the Polyclinic to consult the doctor.

While waiting at the Polyclinic we had our prayer using the programme prepared by Major Ruth Pascoe. We sat quietly and joined our comrades around the world praying. It is good to congregate with like minded people to pray, but there are times when this is not possible and we can pray wherever we may be. Our God is present everywhere and we believe He always answers prayer.

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matt.18:19-20

Disciple and Discipline.

"I believe that a disciplined life is a happy life, especially if our motivation is right - if it is for God's sake." Addison Leitch.

Notice the words disciple and discipline come from the Latin word meaning 'to learn.' Jesus called twelve disciples and during the three years on earth, they were with Him, He taught them many lessons. A disciple is under authority. He submits himself to the authority to his mentor, coach or leader. In an orchestra each musician has to submit to the conductor. There is the score he has to follow. There is the conductor to whom he needs to obey.  Each player cannot do his or her own thing.

Discipline for the Christian is wholehearted submission to the authority to our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us each day seek to do His will. The will of God - nothing more, nothing less, nothing else - a good motto to follow.

Doing the will of God. The best thing I know in this world below is doing the will of God.

Healing - God, doctors and medicine

We thank God for good medical facilities in Singapore and affordable too. God has been good. As age catches up with us visits to hospitals and clinics have increased in frequency. This is something we living in this sinful world cannot avoid.

I strongly believe in prayer for healing for God heals. When we are sick, we must pray for healing, and at the same time go to the doctor and take whatever medicine is prescribed by the physician. God works through medicine and doctors; this is the reason there was balm and physicians in Gilead (Jeremiah 8:22).

Changes of appointment

The news that has just been released brought some big surprises! Our Chief Secretary and TSWM Lieut. Colonels Bob and Wendy Lee are caught in this wave of international changes and will be leaving us in the new year - Their appointments as C.S and TSWM in the Philippines will take effect from 1st February 2013.

We shall miss them. We pray God's special blessing on them as they move to the Philippines.

My wife and I served in the Philippines for three years (1990 to 1993) as the Territorial Leaders and we find Philippines a most challenging appointment. We also proved His grace sufficient.

We look forward to welcome Lieut. Colonels Lyndon and Bronwyn Buckingham from New Zealand as our new Chief Secretary and TSWM.

From experience we have proved God's timing perfect. We look back to our appointments since 1954 in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines and finally in London responsible for South Pacific and East Asia Zone, all arranged in the right order. God is great, God is good, God is gracious and we know He is in perfect control.

Connectivity

For two days we were unable to access the Internet. The IT people from THQ came only this afternoon to fix it, thanks to Jason and Steven.

I wonder how we manged to survive prior to Internet days! Now I can connect with our many friends again. Connectivity is important!

Thank God I came to know the Lord when still young and have always maintained this connectivity with Him. I must confess there have been days when He appeared somewhat distant. I know the fault has not been with God, but with me. Yes there were days when I got distracted, when I lost my focus, but God never changes. He is always the same, yesterday, to day and will be forever.

The Lord has said, "Behold, I am with you all the days, until the completion of the age", Matthew 28:20. I thank God daily for this wonderful assurance from Lord God Almighty.

Patience of our caregivers

My wife and I spent a profitable morning at Peacehaven. We conducted chapel service at Level 1. It was not easy as not all were giving us attention. That cannot help it as they are not used to church as we know it. So the service was more a chit chat about God. Some of the nurses helped us to sing.

We can cover only two floors each Tuesday. Some residents want to talk and we always feel we need to lend a listening ear.

We were very impressed by the patience of the staff - nurses and therapists. Some of the residents are missing home. One 87 year old kept asking me to take him home. I was able to chat with him in Hokkien and did all I could to comfort him. Some are angry with their children for putting them in the Nursing Home. There are those who take it out on the staff. They make unreasonable demands, but the staff cope well, they know how to handle these awkward ones.

But there are the gracious ones who appreciate what is being done for them. They have learned to accept their situation. It's a joy to sit and chat with these positive thinking folk. Some have wonderful testimonies to give and we have been encouraged.

We thank God we are still able to visit the Home and minister to the folk. God has been good to us in giving us daily strength for daily needs.

Counter the weapons of mass distraction

In my devotions yesterday I came across the phrase "weapons of mass distraction."  I've been pondering over those words. How often have I been distracted. I may have good intentions, but before very long, distraction comes and those good intentions get pushed aside.

Come to think of it distractions are unavoidable. The telephone rings, the knock on the door, a visitor drops in. I suppose sometimes it may be good to have some distraction. I can be so focused on doing something that I don't know how to enjoy life. The important thing I feel is for me to discipline myself and get back to my good intention. I need to keep my focus on the right thing and more important on the Lord Jesus.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."

Jesus Light of the world.
