General John Gowans, retired General and good friend of ours was promoted to Glory on 8th December 2012. I thought of one of his poems in a book called "O Lord"
Bethlehem
I saw three wise guys
Yesterday
In Bethlehem!
I couldn't reach
Your 'birthplace'
For their postcards
And their junk
And camels to be photographed.
Lord, how the tourists
Groaned and laughed,
And how the gutters stunk!
A hundred wooden babies
In a hundred wooden mangers
Were going cheap
At half the price
To half a hundred strangers,
I couldn't but be cynical
However much I tried,
Till faint among the souvenirs
I thought a Baby cried?
