This is my story - 92 - Philippines

92 – “On the Way Home” Project.

Lay people throughout the ages have always played an important role in the church in the spreading of the gospel and caring for suffering humanity. They are moved with compassion and long to bless others. They initiate programmes that bring people to Christ. Many of our Corps (churches) in the Philippines were started by enthusiastic Salvationists who when moved to a new area would get their neighbours into their homes to start a meeting – perhaps first with children in the form of Sunday School, women’s meeting, or what we call a cell group or even a social gathering.

In the last chapter, I wrote about Joyville. Now I want to trace back to the genesis of this programme with street children. The members of the Corps Council of Manila Central Corps in one of their meetings suggested to their pastor that they would like to do something for the poor unfortunate children in the streets in their neighbourhood. So they collected funds among their own members of the Church. They arranged jumble sales and the ladies made cakes to sell to raise funds for the Programme called “On the way Home”
The matter then was referred to Territorial Headquarters for the blessing and support of the leaders. They received immediate positive response and practical support.
In the evenings during the colder or wet season, they had “operation lugar” (“hot porridge distribution”) to feed the hungry children in the neighbourhood. They even invited the street kids indoors to sleep in the hall.

Later as the work expanded the Army received help from World Vision and Hong Kong Oxfam. President Mrs. Cory Aquino came to know about our programme and she herself took a special interest and contributed to our new venture. In fact at the Candle Vigil for the Rights of Children observed in the Philippines on 23rd September 1990 the representative speaker was an officer from our Tanay Corps and community centre. All who attended this vigil recited the pledge affirming the desire to help and protect children from abuse.

The word of God tells us “Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." After laying His hands on them, He departed from there. Matthew 19: 13-15

It is well with my soul

"How are you? that seems to be the customary greeting when we meet friends.
And the response these days is "I am good." A few say, "I'm fine."

Really I cannot say, "I'm good."  You recall the conversation Jesus had with the rich young ruler,
A ruler questioned Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone" Luke  18: 19, Mark 10: 18 Matthew 19:17

Read Romans 3 12 "No one does good, not even one...."
Romans  3: 22-23  " There is no distinction... all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God..."

I like to say "I am well." or "It is well with my soul."

God is good! I try to be good and it is my desire and prayer
"To be like Jesus, this hope possesses me,
In every thought and deed,
This is my aim, my creed:
To be like Jesus, this hope possesses me,
His Spirit helping me, Like Him I'll be." John Gowans.

Morning praise to God.

Another day is here. The sun is shining and this verse comes to my mind.

"In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice;
    in the morning I lay my requests before you
    and wait expectantly"  Psalm 5: 3

Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

Lord, I my vows to thee renew;
disperse my sins as morning dew,
grant my first springs of thought and will,
and with thyself my spirit fill.

Direct, control, suggest this day
all I design, or do, or say;
that all my powers, with all their might,
in thy sole glory may unite.  Thomas Ken

Even in retirement I find there is plenty to occupy my time. There is never a dull moment. I pray that I may use my time wisely to bring glory to the God I love and serve. Let me today uphold the name of Jesus in word and in deed.

Delighting in the Lord.

Someone asked us to pray for his son who has gone to America to take up music. He wants us to pray that he will pass his music examination.  This is a request that I find it hard to respond.

First of all I don't know whether the son is a Christian or an atheist. My prayer for him will be for his salvation if he is not a believer. He has to get into right relationship with God first. Otherwise the only prayer he can pray is "Have mercy on me O Lord." He needs to be saved first. He does not attend our church, so we don't even know him.

The Bible tells us "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37: 4

Is it right that every time we come to God in prayer it is just to ask for things, or ask Him to give us certain blessings such as passing an examination or getting a job and so on. We must first know Him, love Him, delight in Him and commit everything we have and do to Him. We take pleasure in the presence of the person we  delight in. This means we know the person well and want to know him even better.

When we delight in a person, we love to be in that person's company. We sing the hymn written by Fanny Crosby  "O the pure delight of a single hour when before thy throne I spend. When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God I commune as friend with friend."

Let us daily seek to grow in spiritual maturity and for a close intimate relationship with the Lord. You will find blessings abound.

The Name of Jesus

What's in a name? Shakespeare's question has been echoing from platforms of theatres for many years. The question has been asked many times and has become common currency among the users of the English language. As the poet has put it "What's in name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

That's true! But do we want to call a rose a hibiscus; refer to a Mercedes as a Susuki or the our City a kampong or village? A name is important. Would-be parents spend hours in search of a name that will express their hopes, desires and aspirations. Many Christian names have worthwhile interpretations and the giving of a name is linked a prayer that the child will live up to that name. Names are important for they are more than labels.

I see posters in our church referring to 'the name of Jesus.' Remember, the angel of the Lord was very specific in his message of Joseph, "You shall call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins."

What a lovely name!

"Of all in earth or Heaven,
   The dearest name to me
Is the matchless name of Jesus,
   The Christ of Calvary.

The Christ of Calvary,
The dearest name to me
Is the matchless name of Jesus,
The Christ of Calvary.

I cannot help but love Him,
 And tell His love to me;
For He became my ransom,
  The Christ of Calvary,

I could not live without Him,
  His love is life to me;
My blood-bought life I give Him,
 The Christ of Calvary.   Nathan Atkinson Aldersley.

The launching of Alpha course

Fourteen of us met this morning for our small group of cell group this morning. We had good time of discussion and sharing.

Some will be back to participate in the launching of Alpha course this evening. Most will not be able to do so because of shift work, distance or age. As we live in the building there is no difficulty for us to join them downstairs in the social hall. We were told the meeting will end at 9.15 p.m.

Prayer - Search me O God

The unexamined life is not worth living - Socrates (469-399 BC)

Search me, O God,
And know my heart today;
Try me, O Savior,
Know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be
Some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from every sin
And set me free.

I praise Thee, Lord,
For cleansing me from sin;
Fulfill Thy Word,
And make me pure within.
Fill me with fire
Where once I burned with shame;
Grant my desire
To magnify Thy Name.

Lord, take my life,
And make it wholly Thine;
Fill my poor heart
With Thy great love divine.
Take all my will,
My passion, self and pride;
I now surrender, Lord
In me abide.

O Holy Ghost,
Revival comes from Thee;
Send a revival,
Start the work in me.
Thy Word declares
Thou wilt supply our need;
For blessings now,
O Lord, I humbly plead.  (James Edwin Orr)

Drinking from my saucer

I've Never Made A Fortune
and It's Probably Too Late Now
but I Don't Worry About That Much
i'm Happy Anyhow
and As I Go Along Life's Journey
i'm Reaping Better Than I Sow
i'm Drinking From My Saucer
'cause My Cup Has Overflowed
haven't Got A Lot Of Riches
and Sometimes The Going's Tough
but I've Got Loving Ones Around Me
and That Makes Me Rich Enough
i Thank God For His Blessings
and The Mercies He's Bestowed
i'm Drinking From My Saucer
'cause My Cup Has Overflowed
o, Remember Times When Things
went Wrong
my Faith Wore Somewhat Thin
but All At Once The Dark Clouds Broke
and Sun Peeped Through Again
so Lord, Help Me Not To Gripe
about The Tough Rows That I've Hoed
i'm Drinking From My Saucer
"cause My Cup Has Overflowed
if God Gives Me Strength And Courage
when The Way Grows Steep And Rough
i'll Not Ask For Other Blessings
i'm Already Blessed Enough
and May I Never Be Too Busy
to Help Others Bear Their Loads
then I'll Keep Drinking From My Saucer
"cause My Cup Has Overflowed!"

Prayer meeting at Peacehaven

What an outpouring of blessings we received this morning when my wife and I joined the staff of Peacehaven Nursing Home for their usual Prayer meeting in the Board Room.

Our Care givers do not have an easy time. Most of the relatives are good and appreciative of the care given to the residents by our staff. But there are some relatives who can be very demanding and have unreasonable expectations. This led to a lot of stress for our nurses and therapists who work under tremendous pressure. We need to pray for them.

Those who attended the Prayer meeting poured their hearts out to the Lord seeking Divine intervention.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6: 12-18

Adult Bible class by Major Lee Kong Yee.

The day began with  Prayer Meeting at 9.15 a.m. at Praise chapel. It is good to start the day with prayer. In the past we used to have this at 1.30 p,m. I only wish and pray that more people would make the effort to attend the prayer meeting.

This was followed at 9.45 a.m by Adult Bible class  led by Major Lee Kong Yee. Last year, when I indicated my desire to step down after serving for ten years, we did not know who would succeed me. We did not know Major Lee was going to be appointed to Singapore.

But the Lord's timing is always perfect. Major Lee Kong Yee from Kuala Lumpur Corps was appointed to Singapore as Education Officer to train the cadets. He and his wife Irene Chang and two children chose to worship at the William Booth Corps (church). He has very kindly taken over this responsibility. Perfect timing!

He decided to continue with my series on 1 Samuel. He is a Bible scholar and teacher and folk who attended have expressed their appreciation. We thank God for our colleagues and fellow believers for their contribution. God has given us different gifts to build His church. Some serve in the kitchen preparing lunch for the folk, others serve by playing in the band or sing in the songsters, or at the door to welcome visitors.

Pioneer Generation Tribute

My wife and I were privileged to attend the Pioneer Generation Tribute held at the Istana on Sunday. The Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong was the Guest of Honour.

From 1973 - 1982 I served as the General Secretary of The Salvation Army in Singapore and Malaysia. I represented The Salvation Army at the National Council of Churches of Singapore and at one time was the President of the National Council. My wife served in the Women's Committee.

It was in this capacity that we were invited to this gathering at the Istana. We attended in our Salvation Army uniform.

It was a real pleasure to meet so many old friends we have not seen for many years.

Chinese New Year celebrations

We spent the first two days at home to welcome and entertain visitors. Thirty people visited us to pay their respects. The first were our own children and grandchildren. What a joy to have the two families together with us at the same time.

The second day was just as busy. On the third day, Sunday, we joined in worship at the William Booth Corps. After the meeting, a group of us met in the home of Francis and Jessie Zhan for a meeting and blessing of their new home at Pandan Gardens.

We then came home and entertained more visitors.

Today the position was reversed. We went to visit two elderly ladies, one 95 at Bedok, the other 83 at Yishun. We got home and had lunch with some friends at Rail Mall. They then came to spend some time with us in fellowship and prayer.

God has blessed us with many good friends. "There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship." Thomas Aquinas
