I give thanks and praise to God for allowing me to live in this world for 80 years! My mother told me years ago that I was born a premature baby and during my childhood days quite sickly. But God allowed this sickly child to live longer than all the siblings! No one in the family lived to eighty!
I've lived beyond my life span of 'three score years and ten.' Everyday is a bonus. My prayer is "Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90: 12.
I thank my many friends for their gifts and greetings sent by e-mail, snail mail, sms, through face book.Thank you friends for taking time to write, type or telephone. I received some surprises from people I've not heard for a long time.
Thank you, those who invited us out for lunch or dinner.
Time is a precious commodity and more so living in this busy age. So the fact that when we take time even for a few minutes to send a greeting, it means a lot to the recipient. So thank you friends and relatives for giving of your time.

Bible Study - Dare to be different - 3
Last Saturday, I concluded with the third in the series of studies on the Life of Joseph.
Events moved very quickly. Joseph was released from prison and after interpreting Pharaoh's dreams Joseph gave Pharaoh a survival plan for the next fourteen years. Only 30 years old, Joseph was made in charge of the country's affairs, he was only second to the Pharaoh. He saved the nation from starvation.
The famine spread and before long his brothers were in Egypt looking for food. His brothers were soon brought into his presence. What an opportunity to get even for the pain and hardship they had caused Joseph.
His Disposition was different
The world lives in the spirit of "an eye for any eye, a tooth for a tooth." It is inherent in human nature to want to take revenge or to retaliate.
After putting his brothers through a series of tests, he discovered the change in their attitude. Judah the brother who had stepped forward with the plan to sell Joseph (37:27) now came forward to take Benjamin's punishment so that Benjamin could return to the father. Now Joseph was convinced his brothers had changed for the better.
Joseph could no longer control himself (45: 1) What a dramatic moment when events reached a climax with the revelation, "I am Joseph!" The response met with silence. We are told "His brothers could not answer him for they were dismayed (literally terrified) at his presence." Joseph did not just revealed his identity, but he revealed also his perspective. "You sold me... but God sent me." (45:5) Seeing God at work in his life had prevented him from being bitter. We today have the assurance of Romans 8: 28 " And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. "
Joseph has given us a wonderful model of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not easy - it is not overlooking the wrong, nor excusing the wrong, nor minimising the wrong. "The miracle of forgiving is the creation of a new beginning. It does not always take away the hurt. It does not deny the past injury. It merely refuses to let them stand in the way of a new start. (Lewis B Smedes) Amazing grace how sweet the sound. A greater than Joseph nailed to the cross prayed the prayer of forgiveness for those who had cruelly put Him there. The world has its standards, but as Christians let us dare to be different and practise the standards of Christ - the disposition to forgive.
"The two primary causes of emotional stress are the failure to forgive and the failure to receive forgiveness." David Seaman in "Healing for Damaged emotions."
His Destiny made him different
Joseph was thrown into the pit, then into prison, and ended up in the palace! All the time, the Lord was with him.
We have a greater destiny than that. We were lifted up out of the horrible pit, the pit of sin. We were delivered from the prison of despair and "To him who overcomes, I will give him the right to sit with me on the throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne." Rev, 3: 21
"You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth." Isaiah 61: 6
John writting Revelation in exile on the island of Patmos desires to encourage his audience who lived under severe persecution gives us wonderful pictures of the destiny of believers. We shall reign forever with Him who sits upon the throne.
Secrets of Fruitfulness in the life of Joseph.

Pentecost Sunday - Changi Corps
We were at Changi Corps (church) this morning and what a great time we had! I think this was one of the best Sundays we've had! The fellowship was marvellous, people were warm and friendly. The congregation participated and sang wholeheartedly. We really felt the moving of the Spirit in our midst! Praise be to God.
At 9.15 a.m. Brother Danny Tong (I have known him since he was a little boy in Ipoh) came to fetch us. He now runs his own air conditioning company - Dantah Engineering Company. He and his wife Siew Khim originally worshipped at our Kallang Bahru Corps which later merged with Changi Corps. They have four lovely children - Eunice, Bernice, Glennice and Philemon all faithfully worshipping in the Corps and participating in activities. We give thanks to God for such lovely Salvationist families.
We began the meeting with the singing of William Booth's Song, sung to the new tune, "Thou Christ of burning cleansing flame, Send the fire!" We ended the meeting with that beautiful prayer, "Breathe on me breath of God, Fill me with life anew."
We give thanks to God for those who came to rededicate their lives to God.
We went to Changi to minister to the people, instead we were being ministered by them.
After the meeting, Major Annie Lim, presented me with a birthday gift and prayed God's special blessing on me. Come to think of it, we've known Annie since she was just a little girl and here she was, standing beside me on the platform to give thanks to God for my 80th birthday. Her husband Major Lim Chee Kwee is now at the International College for Officers in London. Annie is holding the fort and doing well.
The church went through a difficult period, but thank God, people are returning to God and the Army.
We certainly will continue to pray for Changi everyday - Revive Thy work, O Lord.

A prayer for my friends
Heavenly Father, I ask You to bless my friends reading this right now. I am asking You to minister to their spirit at this very moment.
Where there is pain, give them Your peace and mercy.
Where there is self doubting, release a renewed confidence in Your ability to work through them.
Where there is tiredness, or exhaustion, I ask You to give them, patience and strength as they learn submission to your leading.
Where there is spiritual stagnation, I ask You to renew them by revealing your nearness, and by drawing them into greater intimacy with You.
Where there is fear, reveal Your love, and release to them Your courage.
Where there is sin blocking them, reveal it, and break its hold over my friend's life.
Bless their finances, give them greater vision, and raise up leaders and friends to support and encourage them.
Give each one of them discernment to recognize the evil forces around them, and reveal to them the power they have in You to defeat it. I ask You to do these things in Jesus' name. In love,
Your friend.

Importance of prayer
It is easy to talk about the importance of prayer, some preachers give excellent sermons on prayer; Christians spend hours discussing the subject of prayer. On sale in the bookshops are many books on prayer.
But about about attending prayer meetings? Let's not just talk, preach or write about prayer. Let's pray!
We attended the usual prayer meeting at our Territorial Headquarters. There were just ten of us this morning. We felt the presence of the Lord in our midst. He answers prayer.

Senior Citizens
Someone in Australia sent me this message about Senior Citizens, so thought I'd share with my fellow seniors and the potential senior citizens!
"Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world,
real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.
HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took
The melody out of music,
The pride out of appearance,
The courtesy out of driving,
The romance out of love,
The commitment out of marriage,
The togetherness out of the family,
The learning out of education,
The service out of patriotism,
The Golden Rule from rulers,
The nativity scene out of cities,
The civility out of behavior,
The refinement out of language,
The dedication out of employment,
The prudence out of spending,
The ambition out of achievement or
God out of government and school.
And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!!
We do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts!
YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!
I'm the life of the party..... Even if it lasts until 8 p.m.
I'm very good at opening childproof caps..... With a hammer.
I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.
I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying. (LDS)
I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place . . . . . somewhere.
I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.
I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.
Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life!"
Grey hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life. Proverbs 16:31
Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wastng away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 11 Corinthians 4:16
Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4

Bible Study - Dare to be different (2)
Last Saturday 19th May, we had the second of the series of Bible study on the life of Joseph. This was held at the chapel at THQ.
The brothers were annoyed when they heard Joseph, the favourite in the family describe his dreams. The dreams were suggestive of his future greatness and exaltation. To add fuel to fire his filial duty and sense of accountability compelled him to make honest report concerning his unworthy brothers.
Jacob sent Joseph to look for the brothers who were pasturing their flocks at Shechem. Joseph found them at Dothan. There, Joseph was thrown into a pit and then later sold as a slave and was taken into Egypt. He became a servant to Potiphar.
His Dedication was different.
Obviously he must be a very good servant to Potiphar, totally dedicated to his work. We see a sequence of events (39: 1-6) which culminated in his promotion to high office in Potiphar's household. The Lord was with Joseph; hence his lovely attitude and effectiveness. Potiphar increased Joseph's authority and responsibility and let him handle everything except the food Potiphar ate. Potiphar's household was blessed because of the presence and dedication of Joseph.
Joseph was a man of integrity. As Christians we are expected to be people of total integrity. Let us be intentional in holy living.
Later Joseph was wrongly accused and put into prison. Whether in Potiphar's mansion or in prison, he maintained that sense of dedication. As prisoner and slave he could have become bitter, but the Lord was with him and he continued to be dedicated to whatever responsibility given him. Even the Chief prison officer made him in charge of other prisoners.
As the days passed thoughts of his own adverse circumstances receded from his mind. In prison he noticed people who were sad and needed help. He was able to interpret the dreams of two prisoners. He used his gift of interpreting dreams as a ministry even in prison. As the Lord's servant we can always engage in minstry no matter where we are placed or under what circumstances.
His Devotion was different.
Joseph was not only dedicated to his work, he was also devoted to the Lord and his master. Let us give total devotion to our duty regardless of who is the master. Although they were not of the same faith and race, Joseph served Potiphar faithfully and gave him full devotion.
Potiphar's wife tried many times to seduce Joseph (39: 6-12), but Joseph did not yield to temptation. Joseph a man of God would not sin against the Lord. Sexual sin is not just between two consenting adults, it is an act of disobedience to God. One day when they were alone together, she made a desperate attempt by grabbing him by his coat. Joseph fled from the scene. Sometimes we need more than avoiding temptation, we have to flee from it.
"Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, not hell a fury like a woman scorned." William Congreve. Potiphar's wife's infatuation turned to cold hatred.
The lady committed perjury. She turned the tables and accused Joseph of attempted rape. The result, Joseph was thrown into prison.

Ascension Day -Prayer meeting
The Feast of the Ascension, also known as Ascension Day commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is one of the universally celebrated of Christian churches, ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter, and Pentecost. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day of Easter.
We were reminded this morning of this day at our Prayer meeting. Although we were few in number we had a profitable time as we gave thanks to God for the privilege of prayer and brought our petitions and intercessions.

Pastoral visit to the elderly
"This is the day that the Lord has made." Everyday I wake up I thank God for giving me yet another day - yes a bonus! I am not accountable to anyone, except to God for how I spend my time. I pray each day that I be giving the wisdom to spend time wisely. We must value time. Gladstone once said, "Believe me when I tell you that thrift of time will repay you in after life with a usury of profit beyond your most sanguine dreams, and that the waste of it will make you dwindle, alike in intellectual and moral stature, beyond your darkest reckonings."
I am called to be a pastor and evangelist. The word of God is still burning in the bones. Thank God for the opportunities that still come my way.
What a joy it was to visit a number of elderly housebound folk! We visited three people this week - two in their nineties and one in her eighties. It was time well spent in the Lord's service. We were truly blessed as we listened to their testimonies the way God has blessed them. We went to minister but in term were being ministered.
Visiting the sick and the lonely, serving the church, participating in various activities play an important part in Christian service for retirees like us. Every servant of the Lord should have the satisfaction of knowing his labour is directed to the well being of the community.

Mother's Day at Changi Corps
Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in America. She then began a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Jarvis' holiday was adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world.
My wife and I were invited to conduct the meeting at our Changi Church on this special day. Good to hear testimonies from children, youth and adults about their mothers.
It seems to be the done thing for a woman to preach on Mother's Day, but we decided to do differently. She gave the message last year at Changi, so this year, she led the meeting and I preached. I expounded on Proverbs 31: 10- 31. "A Model Mother"
Proverbs says much about women, and it is fitting that this book concludes with a picture and tribute to a woman of noble character. This woman has outstanding abilities, her family's social standing is high. The writer is giving a composite picture portrait of ideal womanhood.
The message was divided into three subtitles.
HER WORTH
'A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.' 10 Obviously she is a godly lady and her strength lies in her inward beauty. She fears that is reverential fear of God. she would refrain from doing anything against God's will. God counts her worthy, and so does her husband and family.
HER WORKS
For her husband. 'Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.' (11 & 12) A perfect marriage.
For her family. 'Her children arise and call her blessed' (11)
Here's a woman who does not sleep till 10.00 a.m. but rises when it is still dark to see to her family. She is not just a homemaker, but a business lady as well.
For her neighbours. 'She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.' (20) She is caring and opens her arms wide to welcome others. She reaches out to people.
HER WORDS.
She speaks positively. She is no gossip. 'She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.' Obviously she is kind and diplomatic. The words of this woman comes from a heart totally dedicated to God. She is a Spirit filled woman.
The message is not just for Mothers, but for all to emulate. 'I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.' Galatians 2: 20

Bible Study - Dare to be different (1)
Last Saturday I began a series of Bible studies entitled "DARE TO BE DIFFERENT" -a study on the life of Joseph. I was told that 20 youth leaders had registered, but about fifty people turned up! Praise the Lord, there is hunger for God's word.
Today we live in a culture of copying or imitating. We are afraid of peer pressure; we like to conform, because we all like to be well thought of. Everyone is doing it. We sometimes use the term 'today's culture' or the 'done thing' - relevance! I’m all for relevance, but do not use this word to cover our own lack of courage to stand up for our convictions.
Joseph in the Old Testament dared to be different! Joseph as a teen ager was the favourite son of Jacob (Israel) His self assurance, moulded by pain and combined with personal knowledge of God allowed him to survive and prosper where most would have failed. He added quiet wisdom to his confidence and won the hearts of people he encountered - Potiphar, the keeper of the prison, other prisoners and even the king and finally his ten brothers.
The first lesson covered two points:
His dress was different Joseph's coat of many colours, or richly ornamented robe, a tunic of long sleeves, was symbol of authority. Jacob did not hide his preference for Joseph. The dress or robe symbolized pre-eminence, superiority and status. It marked him out as a white collar worker while his brothers were blue collar ones. More than physical dress we want to emphasise the importance of our spiritual garment of Christian behaviour. We put away the old garment of sin and unrighteousness and put on the garments of righteousness provided by the Father though the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
His dreams were different. God used visions and dreams to communicate with many throughout the Bible. God is sovereign and He can communicate using whatever means that suit His purpose. Best of all today He communicates with us through His Word and the Holy Spirit.
Our dreams during sleep are coloured by our thoughts during waking hours. Our secret fears and longings find expression in our dreams. We describe our longings, our hopes, and our ambitions as our dreams. Dreams or visions give us direction and increases our potential. It enables us to prioritise, adds value to our work. When in Christ our dreams our dreams are different from the dreams of the people of the world. For us let our dream be to fulfil the mission of saving souls, growing saints and serving suffering humanity to the glory of God.

Pastoral Visitation
"Wide was his parish, with houses far asunder,
Yet he neglected not in rain or thunder,
In sickness, or in trouble, to pay call
On the remotest whether great or small
Upon his feet, and in his hand a stave." Chaucer: Prologue to Canterbury Tales.
I wonder how many people these days remember the poem. Chaucer speaks to those living in a society quite different from ours. Certainly this is not Singapore, a bustling city without a country.
I wonder how my pastors, parsons, ministers of the gospel, priests or Salvation Army Officers still pay pastoral visits to their flock? In my time as a Corps Officer, or pastor, it was mandatory to clock in a minimum of eighteen hours a week, that's three hours a day, not counting Sunday! Has the rule been rescinded? I don't know. ( I hear someone saying, "you and your good old days again.")
I appreciate a ministry well suited to the past century, or mainly to a rural or agricultural country, may not be practical in our urbanised society, the world we live in today. We do need to adapt to the changing world. A pastor who does not want to do pastoral visitation can always find excuses or arguments to support him. I am certain there are still needs to be met and ways and means to connect with our people.
There are many housebound elderly and sick people who desperately long for the pastor to visit. This last week we must have done our eighteen hours, not that anyone is calling us to account for our time. As retirees we are accountable only to God. We visit not to fill our pews, or to ensure tithes are received for the church. We are not here to prop up the institutional church by seeking help to support this or that project. Or to meet the church budget!
We do for one reason. We follow the footsteps of the Good Shepherd who gave His life for His sheep. Yesterday it took us three hours on buses, travelling time to visit a ninety four year lady. It was worth the time spent when we think what this visit meant to this saintly Christian living alone.
That's why we still visit our Salvation Army Nursing Home once a week to do chapel service and to go round visiting the residents. The nurses need words of encouragment too. The majority are from overseas - Phillipines, China, Myanmar, India and they do miss their families. Singaporeans form the minority. By God's grace, we will carry on with this pastoral ministry for residents and staff.
Help us to help each other, Lord,
Each other's cross to share;
Let each our friendly aid afford
And feel each other's care. -Charles Wesley

This is my story - 68 (Hong Kong/Taiwan)
68 – Our Leaders from International Headquarters
The Salvation Army International Headquarters is in London. The Army is currently at work in 124 countries and for administrative purposes divided into five zones – Europe, Americas and the Caribbean, Africa, South Asia and South Pacific and East Asia. Each Zone comes under the leadership of an International Secretary who is accountable to the General. The Chief of the Staff is the Second in command of The Salvation Army.
During our term in Hong and Taiwan, we worked directly under the following International Secretaries - Commissioners Edwin Marion, William Cairns, Robert Bath and John Clinch. All of them visited the Command of Hong Kong and Taiwan for reviews or inspections as well as conducting meetings. (The Command is now known as Hong Kong/Macau Command. The change was made in 1997 when Hong Kong reverted to China)
It was during the time of Commissioner Cairns that the current Headquarters at 11 Wing Sing Lane was officially opened by the Governor Sir Edward Youde in April 1985 Commissioner Cairns prayed the dedicatory prayer.
On the way from Hong Kong to Sydney his next destination, he had a heart attack which caused us a great deal of concern. Maybe the heavy programme the Command put on for him triggered it! We hope not! Anyway he recovered fairly quickly. In fact later at the High Council he accepted nomination for Generalship, but the vote went to Eva Burrows.
On an earlier visit to the Command I met him in Taiwan and together with the Regional Commander toured the whole Region from Taipei to Tainan. Then he came with me to Hong Kong and spent Chinese New Year with us. We built up a friendship that lasted for many years till his promotion to Glory. In his retirement he was approached by the then Officer Commanding in Singapore Lieut. Colonel Ivan Lang to write my biography called “The Shy Singaporean.” He worked extremely hard, contacted our family and many friends who had worked with us in the past. He collated the information and in a very short time completed this book published in time to coincide with our retirement from active service in 1997.
The first General to visit Hong Kong in our time was General Jarl Wahlstrom. He and his wife were very humble people and easy to entertain. It was such a joy to have them for a few days. I think they were taken aback by the crowds in Hong Kong particularly along Nathan Road where the old Army Headquarters was. We had a great time with them during Congress.
When we visited Finland some years later to conduct the Territorial Congress, General Wahlstrom was one of my interpreters. He and his wife gave good support to the territory. At that time the Territorial Commander was Colonel Mauri Palmonuksa who had been a session mate with me at the International College for Officers in 1963 the 33rd Session. What memories!
In April 1990 General Eva Burrows was the leader of our Command Congress. The General was warmly welcomed to Hong Kong by the Governor Sir David Wilson and Lady Wilson. Advisory Board members under the chairmanship of Mr. David Li, Command Headquarters’ Officers and local officers (lay people) were included in the reception hosted by His Excellency the Governor at His residence.
The Chief of the Staff Commissioner Caughey Gauntlett and his wife the President of Women’s Organisations paid their visit first to Taiwan then to Hong Kong. The South Pacific and East Asia College of officers was in session and the Chief was able to include in his busy itinerary visit to talk to the delegates and conduct the Covenant Service. That year I was the principal of the College with Captain Keith Cheng, our Social Services Secretary as the Vice Principal.
Commissioner and Mrs. Gauntlett became very good friends and twice billeted us when we were invited to conduct meetings at St. Albans Corps the Corps where they soldiered.
We were blessed in that we had very good staff. Our General Secretary, Major Moira Wright was a tremendous worker and put in more hours than the average person. We had a good team of officers who gave excellent support that made our term in Hong Kong and Taiwan a very happy one.
Commissioner and Mrs Gauntlett were very caring and understanding. They had worked for many years in Africa and Europe and quite used to cross culture setting. We kept contact with them even in retirement and twice we were billeted at their home at St. Albans when we visited their Corps to conduct weekend meetings.
We received many visitors to Hong Kong as it is a quite a tourist attraction. Our own family - both Gladys and Kum Pui and later Stephen and Dolly came and spent their holidays with us while we were in Hong Kong.

Work and Worship
Yesterday was worship. Today, Monday for a retiree like me, its back to work, not that I have too. But I choose to. Work is ordained by God. There is always the house to clean, washing to be done, place to be tidied and Bible lessons to prepare. Its not drudgery when all done for the glory of God.
In Dorothy Sayers' play on the building of Canterbury Cathedral. The recording angel is making an entry beside the name of William of Sens, architect of the Cathedral, and says to the Archangel Raphael, 'Canst thou indeed find any grace in William the builder up of Canterbury. Raphael replies,
'Behold he prayeth, not with the lips alone,
But with the hand and with the cunning brain
Men worship the Eternal Architect.'
Work is sacred when God is in it. He is the Eternal Architect who created the universe. There is a real sense in which the Spirit of God inspires the good nurse, the doctor, the social worker, the engineer, the labourer working in construction sites under the hot sun, just as he inspires the preacher to prepare his sermon for Sunday. Or the retiree trying to prepare his next Bible lesson for the next class! Or even sweep and mop the floor or clean the toilet.
George Eliot said the same thing in his beautiful poem Stradivarius,
"I say, not God Himself can make man's best
Without best men to help Him.
'Tis God gives skill,
But not without men's hand. He cannot make
Antonio's Stradivari's violins,
Without Antonio.'
I'm reflecting on this day after Sunday. Work is Worship! I continue in my worship and enjoy it. Thank God at almost eighty, my mind still works, my fingers still type, my eyes still see. Thanks be to God. From His ever grateful servant - To God be the glory!

Gideon
As we move through the book of Judges, we notice the children of Israel would serve the Lord as long as they had a strong leader. It is like many Christians today, whose trust is only in the pastor and when there is a change, they stop serving God. We need to focus on God. When that leader passed from the scene, the Israelites fell back into their sins. When they sinned, God used the surrounding pagan nations to chastise or harass them. He allowed their enemies to afflict and oppress Israel to show them the high price of low living.
These enemies persistently tried to draw Israel away from God into their own wicked way of life. As long as Israel had strong leadership, they were able to live clean. When that leadership failed, they wandered away from the Lord. They were weak, vacillating people who had trouble staying on course with the Lord.
Everyone of us deals with certain areas of weakness. There are areas in our lives where we seem to be in a constant struggle for righteousness. Hebrews refers to these areas as “the sin that so easily entangles”, Heb. 12:1. Our enemy, Satan, knows our weaknesses and targets people to entice, entangle, and draw away into evil, 2 Tim. 2:25-26. Satan lays the trap for us because he knows we are vulnerable. James 1:12-16.
The oppression of Israel by the Midianites resulted in Israel losing its will to fight. They ran away and hid in the mountains and caves while the enemy overran their land. Their sin made them weak. It caused them to lose their will to fight. It left them utterly defeated!
When we allow sin to reign in our lives, we will find the same thing is true. Sin robs us of our character. It leaves us unwilling and unable to fight. When we allow sin to rule in our hearts, we become listless, lifeless and lethargic in our Christian life. Sin causes us to hide in fear while the enemy takes everything we value!

Words of Life
We've been using the devotional WORDS OF LIFE since the first issue was published, in fact we started with its predecessor SOLDIER'S ARMOURY when it first began publication. It was a simple little devotional which cost 60 cents.
For some unknown reason, this current issue is late in reaching Singapore. Five days have already gone and we still have not receive it. What a disappointment! We don't know the reason for the delay - maybe the fault lies with the distributors, the publishers, or the postal system. For the time being we are using another devotional called "One Day at a time" by William MacDonald, I found this in my own bookshelf. It's an interesting and helpful devotional.
Well, thank God, we always have the Bible. I possess quite a number of translations. Maybe it is time just to go direct to read God's word and not depend on devotional daily readings.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Psalms 12:6
Break Thou the Bread of Life,
Dear Lord, to me,
As Thou didst break the loaves
Beside the sea;
Beyond the sacred page
I seek Thee, Lord;
My spirit pants for Thee,
O Living Word.
Thou art the Bread of Life,
O Lord, to me,
Thy holy Word the truth
That saveth me;
Give me to eat and live
With Thee above;
Teach me to love Thy truth,
For Thou art Love.
Oh, send Thy Spirit, Lord,
Now unto me,
That He may touch my eyes,
And make me see;
Show me the truth concealed
Within Thy Word,
And in Thy Book revealed
I see the Lord.
Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord,
To me, to me,
As Thou didst bless the bread
By Galilee;
Then shall all bondage cease,
All fetters fall,
And I shall find my peace,
My All in all. (Verse 1 by Mary A Lathbury, Remaining Verses Alexander Groves.)

Work with joy and satisfaction
A busy day. Woke up at 4.30 a.m. Did my exercise and devotions. Cleaned the house and got things ready for cell group. Had cell meeting from 10.00 a.m. then adjourned for lunch. There were ten of us today to share fellowship, the word and meal together. My wife did the cooking earlier. Some brought food to share. By the time the last one left, it was late in the afternoon.
Did my Bible lesson on Judges - Lesson 16 on Gideon. I am well ahead in my preparation. So here am I doing my e-mail and writing my blog. We are retired, but seem to be busy all the time.
A verse came to my mind "What does man gain for all his labour at which he toils under the sun?" Ecclesiastes 1: 3
Just thinking or reflecting. I still have vivid memory of the film I watched when I was still in school. Goodness me - more than half as century ago! Yes, I still remember "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." One scene depicts the dwarfs shouldering their picks and shovels and marching off singing,
"Whistle while you work,
Put on that grin and start right in,
To whistle while you work."
If we ask the dwarfs this question, "What does a man gain by all his toil?" I can hear the response from the dwarfs - "With joy and satisfaction"
So no complaints. I am happy with life as it is. Thank God for health and strength to still work. And I can sing the songs of praise as I labour for the Master from the dawn to setting son. Praise God.
I feel sorry for those whose attitude to work exists only in Walt Disney's films. For such daily work or service is a drudgery. The belief that work serves no other purpose than providing money for our daily needs is a destructive fallacy.
We work for the glory of God. God Himself is a worker - the Eternal Architect who brought creation into being and sustains it by His own power. Work is sacred because God is in it with us.
"Let us labour for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us tell of all His wondrous love and care;
Then, when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, we'll be there." James M Black

Prayer gently lifts me
What a great time we had as a group of us prayed together. We felt the powerful presence of God Almighty in our midst as we gave thanks to Him for answered prayers. We brought our petitions to Him in faith that our prayers asked in His name will be answered. I am reminded of the beautiful chorus
Prayer gently lifts me to highest heaven,
From Earth's confusion to Jesus' breast;
My sin and weakness, my doubt and sorrow,
Are lost for ever in sweetest rest.
Never be too busy to pray.
Our Lord's promise to His children. "You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." John 14: 14

Visited two handicapped elderly ladies
We visited two elderly ladies, both handicapped and in their seventies. Grace and Mary had association with The Salvation Army Central Corps many years ago, in fact Mary used to sing in the Central Corps songsters in the fifties and sixties. They had not attended the Army for many years and obviously are not known to the new generation.
Grace will be 72 this Friday, so we thought we should visit and pray with her. Mary is much older and now finds it difficult to go out. We are glad in recent years TOUCH Community Services has been helping them and every Sunday provide wheelchairs and transportation to take them to church.
We thank God for health and strength, both physical and spiritual to be able to move about and engage in ministry. It's such a joy to share blessings especially with the housebound.
Minutes after we got home, it rained cats and dogs. Good thing we got home safely. We take public transport everywhere.
Grace will be 72 this Friday, so we thought we should visit and pray with her. Mary is much older and now finds it difficult to go out. We are glad in recent years TOUCH Community Services has been helping them and every Sunday provide wheelchairs and transportation to take them to church.

Visited our daughter Poh Chin
Normally on a Tuesday, we visit Peacehaven to conduct chapel service and also visit Poh Chin. Today, Labour Day, public holiday, there was no chapel, so we made our own way just to visit her.
We started our journey at 9.30 a.m. and it took us almost two hours to get to Peacehaven by bus. We visited Poh Chin, prayed with her then it was time to have lunch. We sat in the garden to have our lunch of sandwiches which we brought with us. It was so quiet and peaceful. First we chatted with the two Malay gardeners in bahasa (Malay language). Then after they had gone we were left to ourselves to enjoy the peace and quiet of the beautiful and well kept garden.
The journey home took much longer - two hours sitting on the bus. And it was quite crowded. We thank God we can still get around by ourselves on public transport.
Now back at home, I am reflecting on the scene in the garden.
"God Almighty first planted a garden. And indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures." Francis Bacon
"How deeply seated in the human heart is the liking for gardens and gardening." Alexander Smith
Haldor Lillenas (1885-1959) was a twentieth-century gospel hymn writer and publisher. Ordained a minister in the Church of the Nazarene, author, song evangelist, poet, music publisher and prolific hymn writer is estimated to have composed over 4,000 hymns, the most famous being Wonderful Grace of Jesus. Here is one of his songs - "In the garden of my heart."
There’s a sacred and hallowed retreat,
Where my soul finds a fellowship sweet,
Where the Lord of my life I may meet,
In the garden of my heart.
Refrain
In the cool of the day He walks with me,
In the rose bordered way He talks with me;
In love’s holy union,
And sacred communion,
In the garden of my heart.
There is naught can disturb or molest,
There my spirit finds comfort and rest,
And my soul is no longer distressed
In the garden of my heart.
Shut away from earth’s strife and its din,
And protected from soul staining sin,
For my Savior is dwelling within,
In the garden of my heart.
There the dove of sweet peace always sings,
And my faith ever trustingly clings;
And the chime of sweet happiness rings
In the garden of my heart. (Haldor Lillenas)
